Russian Checkers 8×8
In Russian Checkers, the game begins with white moving first on a dark-squared 8×8 board. Mandatory captures are enforced, and pieces can capture both forward and backward. Kings have the freedom to move and capture diagonally across any number of squares. A unique feature is the Turkish strike rule, allowing only one capture per move. When faced with multiple capture options, players can choose any, not necessarily the longest. Upon reaching the opponent's edge, a piece becomes a king and can immediately play as one if possible.
A draw can be declared under several conditions:
- If a player with checkers and three (or more) kings against one opponent's king fails to capture after 15 moves.
- In king-only games, if no progress is made after 30 moves in 4-5 piece endings or 60 moves in 6-7 piece endings.
- If a player with three pieces against one king on the "high road" can't capture within 5 moves.
- If only kings are moved without captures or promotions for 15 moves.
- If the same position repeats three or more times with the same player to move.
International Checkers 10×10
International Checkers is played on a 10×10 board with similar starting conditions as Russian Checkers. The mandatory capture rule applies, and pieces can move and capture in both directions. Kings again enjoy full diagonal movement. The Turkish strike rule is also in effect, but the majority rule requires capturing the most pieces if multiple options exist. A unique aspect is that a piece reaching the opponent's edge during a capture continues as a regular piece, only becoming a king if it reaches the edge by a regular move or ends a capture sequence there.
