The 29 Card Game, sometimes referred to as the 28 Card Game due to minor variations in rules, is a popular South Asian trick-taking game. In this game, the Jack and the Nine hold the highest value in every suit.
Typically, 29 is enjoyed by four players in fixed partnerships, with partners sitting opposite each other.
The game uses 32 cards from a standard 52-card deck, divided into eight cards per suit: hearts, diamonds, clubs, and spades. The card rankings from high to low within each suit are J-9-A-10-K-Q-8-7. The objective is to capture tricks that contain high-value cards.
The points for each card are as follows:
- Jacks: 3 points each
- Nines: 2 points each
- Aces: 1 point each
- Tens: 1 point each
- Other cards (K, Q, 8, 7): no points
This totals 28 points from the cards. Some versions award an additional point for the last trick, bringing the total to 29, which is where the game gets its name. However, many modern players do not count the last trick's point, yet the game retains the name 29.
Traditionally, the Twos, Threes, Fours, and Fives not used in play serve as trump indicators, with each player receiving one of each suit. The Sixes are utilized to keep score, with each partnership using one red and one black Six.
