Auction Bridge and International Bridge (IB) is a variation of the classic Bridge card game, representing the third stage in the evolution of bridge, following straight bridge (bridge whist). It served as a direct predecessor to modern contract bridge, with its roots tracing back to the older games of whist and bridge whist.
The scoring system in Auction Bridge & IB—including trick scoring, bonus scoring, and penalty scoring—is significantly different from that of contract bridge. One key distinction is the absence of the concept of vulnerability, which plays a major role in later variations like contract bridge.
The rules for selecting trumps are largely similar, although in contract bridge, trump selection and bidding involve more complexity. The gameplay and general laws, however, remain quite comparable to those found in contract bridge.
In Auction Bridge & IB, the dealer makes the first trump declaration and must commit to winning at least the odd trick in a chosen trump suit or at No-trumps. Bidding is based on point value rather than the number of tricks. A higher point total takes precedence over a greater number of tricks (ignoring doubles). For instance, a bid of 3 Spades (27 points) would beat a bid of 4 Clubs (24 points).
Each trick beyond the sixth scores as follows:
- No-trumps: 10 points
- Spades: 9 points
- Hearts: 8 points
- Diamonds: 7 points
- Clubs: 6 points
