The Hang is a unique musical instrument classified as an idiophone, originating from Switzerland.
This innovative instrument consists of two deep-drawn, nitrided steel half-shells bonded together at the rim, forming a distinctive UFO-shaped resonator. The top surface (called "Ding") features a central hammered note surrounded by seven or eight additional tone fields. The bottom surface ("Gu") presents a smooth plane with a central sound hole - striking the rim produces a tuned resonance. This instrument is also commonly known as a handpan.
While incorporating fundamental acoustic principles similar to steelpan instruments, the Hang functions as a specialized Helmholtz resonator. Its development represents decades of meticulous research into steelpan technology and other percussion instruments.
