Preparation for Children Going to the Hospital
"HC And - When Mother or Father Has Cancer" is a collaborative project developed by the Oncology Department R at H.C. Andersen Children and Youth Hospital, Odense University Hospital, along with hospitalized children, their families, and 10:30 Visual Communication. This resource is specifically designed as patient information for children aged 4-7 years, aiming to prepare them and reduce anxiety related to hospital experiences, especially when many medical terms are unfamiliar to them.
"HC And - When Mother or Father Has Cancer" serves as an introductory guide to the general cancer patient journey at the hospital, tailored for the youngest children, their families, and friends. The content is delivered through a child's voice and engaging animations, fitting into the "Learning through play with tablet/mobile phone/touch screen" genre. This approach is particularly effective for children in this age group, who learn best through play and concrete information.
As relatives of cancer patients, children can become overwhelmed with information. To address this, HC And is structured into short, manageable sequences that are accessible at a child's level, making it ideal for newcomers to start their understanding here.
The content is divided into 7 staged stories that address questions about cancer, chemotherapy, and radiotherapy. These materials serve as an educational tool for hospital staff, helping to establish a common understanding with the child.
HC And is available for free download to everyone.
