Baldur\'s Gate 3: Should You Free Orpheus?

by Zachary Jan 18,2025

In Baldur's Gate 3, one of the most crucial decisions awaits players near the game's climax: freeing the imprisoned Githyanki Prince Orpheus or allowing the Emperor to handle the situation. This choice, made after acquiring the Orphic Hammer, significantly impacts the party's fate.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Decision

Updated February 29, 2024: Before confronting this dilemma, players must defeat Ketheric Throm, Lord Enver Gortash, and Orin, requiring thorough exploration of Baldur's Gate. This decision carries immense weight; companions might sacrifice themselves. High skill checks (potentially requiring a 30 roll) are needed for certain interactions to influence companion choices.

Spoiler Warning: The following discusses the game's ending.

Should You Free Orpheus?

This decision hinges on player preferences. The Emperor warns that releasing Orpheus risks party members becoming Illithids.

Baldur's Gate 3 Orpheus Choice

After the Netherbrain battle (within the Astral Prism), the choice is presented: free Orpheus or let the Emperor absorb his power.

Siding with the Emperor: Orpheus is sacrificed, his knowledge absorbed. Lae'zel and Karlach may disapprove, impacting their personal quests. While this ensures victory over the Netherbrain, it might disappoint fans of these characters.

Freeing Orpheus: This causes the Emperor to align with the Netherbrain. A party member might become a Mind Flayer. However, Orpheus joins the fight alongside the Githyanki. He'll even willingly become a Mind Flayer to save his people if asked.

In short: Choose the Emperor to avoid becoming a Mind Flayer; free Orpheus to risk Illithid transformation for a potentially more satisfying outcome (though Lae'zel and Karlach might leave).

Moral Considerations:

The "good" choice depends on your perspective. It boils down to loyalty. Orpheus is the rightful Githyanki ruler, opposing Vlaakith's tyranny. A Githyanki player might naturally side with him. However, obeying Voss and Lae'zel might feel overly demanding to others. The Gith prioritize themselves above all else.

The Emperor, generally a benevolent figure, aims to defeat the Netherbrain and aid the party. He accepts the possibility of sacrifice. Following his plan might lead to Illithid transformation, but it's a morally sound path.

Remember, BG3 offers multiple endings. Strategic choices can lead to an outcome that satisfies everyone.
