Breakout Beyond Puts a New Angle on Atari's Classic Brick-Breaker

by Michael Mar 27,2025

The iconic 1976 game Breakout is set to make a triumphant return with a modern twist in "Breakout Beyond," developed by Choice Provisions, the creators behind the acclaimed BIT.TRIP series. This new iteration maintains the classic paddle-and-ball mechanics but introduces a unique horizontal progression, moving the action from left to right. The core objective remains the same—breaking bricks—but with an added flair as players rack up combos, triggering dazzling lights and effects.

Breakout Beyond isn't just about smashing bricks; it's about doing so with style. Special bricks unlock a variety of stunning effects, from massive explosions to an actual laser cannon, adding depth and excitement to the gameplay. With 72 meticulously designed levels and an unlockable endless mode, players can compete globally on leaderboards. For those who enjoy company, the game offers a local two-player co-op mode, ensuring the fun is shared.

Originally slated as an exclusive for the Intellivision Amico in 2020, Breakout Beyond's development took a new turn when Atari acquired and decided to complete the project. Ethan Stearns, Atari's senior director of games publishing, expressed enthusiasm about the acquisition, stating, "We're thrilled to be able to bring this gem to our players. The team thought it was a brilliant concept, preserving the heart of Breakout's gameplay while also giving the formula a completely new spin. Breakout Beyond is a worthy new entry into the Breakout pantheon, and we can't wait to see the insane combos brick-breakers will make."

The Intellivision Amico, announced in 2018 with an anticipated 2020 release, has faced numerous delays and setbacks. Despite these challenges, Atari stepped in last year to acquire the branding and rights to Intellivision, though not the Amico console itself.

Fans of Breakout can look forward to experiencing Breakout Beyond later this year, as it launches across multiple platforms including PC, PlayStation 4 and 5, Xbox Series X and S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, and the Atari VCS.
