Vincent van Gogh created his renowned Sunflowers series during his prolific Arles period. He deeply connected with the sunflower, viewing it as a symbol of gratitude and artistic inspiration. He wrote to a friend: "*If \[Georges\] Jeannin has the peony, \[Ernest\] Quost the hollyhock, I indeed, before others, have taken the sunflower.*"
In August 1888, he painted four sunflower versions. He revisited the motif in January 1889, creating a repetition of the third and two repetitions of the fourth version. The fourth version and its repetitions are the most famous. The original (F454) resides at London's National Gallery, one repetition (F457) at Tokyo's Sompo Museum of Art, and the most iconic repetition (F458), known for its vibrant colors, is housed at Amsterdam's Van Gogh Museum.

Collaborating with LEGO, the Van Gogh Museum (established in 1973) released this LEGO set, a three-dimensional tribute to the F458 repetition. Abstract pieces recreate van Gogh's signature thick brushstrokes.

The 34 numbered bags and instruction booklet (including a QR code linking to a van Gogh podcast) offer a structured build. The frame is constructed first, followed by the canvas, culminating in mounting the canvas into the frame with pins—a satisfyingly authentic process.

A delightful detail mirrors a historical fact: Van Gogh extended the canvas height with a wooden strip. The LEGO set cleverly replicates this with a separate strip affixed with pins, using brown bricks to mimic wood. This subtle, builder-only detail adds a unique touch and a sense of accomplishment.

Building the sunflowers is somewhat repetitive, reflecting van Gogh's meticulous approach. However, the result is stunning. The wilting flowers and varied perspectives initially appear abstract but gain coherence from a distance, showcasing the artistry of both van Gogh and the LEGO designers.

The set's final destination is clear: a wall. This focus on display adds to the overall experience. Even a week after completion, the set remains a captivating piece, revealing new details with each viewing. This is a superb LEGO set, highly recommended.
