Where You Can Buy the Original Nintendo Switch Pro Controller Ahead of the Switch 2 Release

by Ethan May 07,2025

Nintendo unveiled all the exciting details about the Switch 2 during its April Direct, and fans have been eagerly waiting for preorders to open in the U.S. While the console's price wasn't a shock, the cost of first-party Switch 2 games at launch certainly raised some eyebrows. Notably, *Mario Kart World* will set you back $80 at launch. Alongside the new console, Nintendo is also rolling out a fresh line of Switch 2 accessories that have seen price hikes compared to their original Switch counterparts—and these prices have continued to climb since the initial announcement.

The one accessory I was most concerned about was the new Switch 2 Pro controller, now priced at a steep $85. As someone who already owns multiple Switch Pro controllers, I wasn't keen on having to buy a new version. Fortunately, Nintendo confirmed in a developer interview that the original Switch Pro controller will indeed be compatible with the Switch 2.

While many gamers might opt for the newer Switch 2 Pro controller, it's not necessary for most games. If you already own a Switch Pro controller, you can stick with it and save $80 for new games. If you're in the market for a Pro controller and planning to buy the Switch 2, the standard Switch Pro controller remains a more affordable option at $69.99.

It's worth noting that these older controllers might sell out before the Switch 2 hits the market, making way for the newer model. Amazon is currently facing a significant stock shortage and is only offering third-party alternatives. In addition to the compatibility of the regular Switch Pro controller, Nintendo has confirmed that the original Joy-Con controllers will also work with the Switch 2—though we generally recommend the Switch Pro controller for most games due to its superior comfort and functionality.

When Will the Switch 2 Pro Controller Be Available?

If the Switch 2 Pro controller is the only accessory you're eager to get your hands on, you'll need to wait until the console launches. The new controller will be officially available starting on June 5, alongside the launch of the Switch 2. You can start preordering the new console on April 24, which is when you'll likely be able to preorder the official accessories as well. Keep in mind that the Switch 2 Pro controller is only compatible with the Switch 2, so you won't be able to use it with the standard Switch.

Listings for the Switch 2 Pro controller are already popping up at Walmart and Best Buy, though no preorder date is currently displayed. Walmart also features listings for upcoming Switch 2 games you can soon preorder.
