ByteDance Shifts US Publishing to Skystone in Major Overhaul

by Layla Apr 17,2025

One of the biggest news stories in the mobile gaming world this year was the unexpected shift of popular titles like Mobile Legends: Bang Bang and Marvel Snap to a new publisher. This change came in the wake of ByteDance's decision to stop publishing their releases in the US, prompted by the political pressures surrounding the TikTok ban. As a result, US-based Skystone Games has stepped in to take over, promising new region-specific versions of these games.

The TikTok ban, or the voluntary offlining of the app, brought about significant discussions across various platforms. However, for mobile gamers, the real shock was seeing top-tier games suddenly pulled from app stores without prior notice to the teams or the player base. This move was part of a broader political effort to force ByteDance to divest from its successful social media platform.

Although TikTok managed to return online, the same swift recovery was not seen for the affected games. Marvel Snap, for instance, quickly sought a new publisher and found a solution with Skystone Games, which now manages virtually all of ByteDance's former US-published titles.

Touch the skyFor the average player, this transition is a welcome development, ensuring they can continue enjoying their favorite games either as usual or through tailored US versions. However, the underlying issue of games being caught in political crossfires is less than ideal. It highlights the vulnerability of our favorite titles to political decisions, which is a concern for both developers and players alike.

As the deadline for a potential TikTok sale approaches, the gaming community remains on alert. The handling of this situation could set a precedent for how similar scenarios are managed in the future, potentially impacting other games published by companies under similar political scrutiny.
