Genshin Impact 5.5: Varesa vs. Xiao - Who to Pull?

by Matthew May 25,2025

In *Genshin Impact* Version 5.5, set to launch on March 26, two exciting new characters, Varesa and Iansan, will be introduced. Iansan is a 4-Star Electro Polearm, while Varesa is a 5-Star Electro Catalyst. The Version 5.5 livestream showcased both characters, with Varesa's kit particularly catching the community's eye due to its unique playstyle reminiscent of Xiao's.

How Is Varesa’s Playstyle Similar to Xiao’s in Genshin Impact?

Varesa's kit stands out with its distinctive Charged Attacks, which not only launch her into the air but also enable Plunging Attacks while generating Nightsoul Points. Given her Natlan origins, these Charged Attacks are key to her gameplay, focusing on generating Nightsoul Points.

Her Elemental Skill, Riding the Night-Rainbow, transforms her into a luchador pro wrestler, rushing forward and dealing Electro DMG. Following this, her Normal Attacks convert into Plunging Attacks without stamina consumption, echoing Xiao's playstyle when he uses his Elemental Burst, Bane of All Evil, which boosts his jumping capability for consecutive Plunging Attacks.

With enough Plunging Attacks, Varesa can transition into a masked luchador state called Fiery Passion when her Nightsoul Meter is full, enhancing her attacks and Burst. This mechanic underscores the necessity of Plunging Attacks in her gameplay.

Should You Stick to Xiao or Pull for Varesa in Genshin Impact?

The key distinction between Xiao and Varesa's Plunging Attack playstyles is that Xiao needs his Elemental Burst to perform continuous Plunging Attacks, while Varesa can initiate them with her Charged Attacks alone. This allows her to not only enter a more powerful state but also maintain Plunging Attacks in this form.

If you're a fan of Xiao's playstyle and enjoy this type of gameplay, Varesa could be an excellent addition to your roster. Her independence from the Elemental Burst for Plunging Attacks sets her apart. Additionally, if you have other Natlan characters, Varesa synergizes well with them, leveraging Nightsoul's Blessing.

However, it's worth noting that Xianyun will also be featured in the *Genshin Impact* 5.5 (Phase I) banner alongside Varesa. Xianyun is a superb support for Plunging Attack users like Xiao. If you already have Xiao and lack Xianyun, pulling for her might be the better choice. Otherwise, Varesa offers a fresh yet familiar experience.
