"Harry Potter TV Series Unveils First Six Cast: Hagrid, Snape Included"

by Zoey Apr 16,2025

Warner Bros. and HBO have officially unveiled the first six actors who will portray iconic Hogwarts teachers in the eagerly anticipated Harry Potter series. This announcement comes after months of speculation about the fresh interpretations of Harry, Hermione, and Ron's journey. The casting news has been confirmed, featuring acclaimed actor John Lithgow (known from Conclave and Dexter) as Albus Dumbledore, a role he had previously hinted at taking on. The casting choices have stirred excitement among fans, who have been eagerly awaiting details on how the beloved story will be reimagined.

Among the announced cast, familiar names include Nick Frost (Shaun of the Dead, Hot Fuzz) stepping into the role of Rubeus Hagrid, and Paapa Essiedu (I May Destroy You, Black Mirror) as Severus Snape. Joining them are Janet McTeer (Me Before You, The Menu) as Minerva McGonagall, Luke Thallon (The Favourite, Present Laughter) as Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse (The Fast Show, Alice Through the Looking Glass) as Argus Filch. These actors are set to breathe new life into these cherished characters, and fans are buzzing with anticipation.

The show's creative team, including showrunner and executive producer Francesca Gardiner and director Mark Mylod, expressed their excitement about the cast in a joint statement: "We’re delighted to have such extraordinary talent onboard, and we can’t wait to see them bring these beloved characters to new life."

The roles of Dumbledore, Hagrid, and Snape are not just pivotal within the Harry Potter universe but are also iconic in the broader landscape of pop culture. John Lithgow, in particular, has shared his thoughts on stepping into the shoes of Dumbledore, highlighting the significance of the role. In an interview with ScreenRant earlier this year, he remarked, "I just got the phone call up at the Sundance Film Festival for yet another film, and it was not an easy decision because it’s going to define me for the last chapter of my life, I’m afraid. But I’m very excited. Some wonderful people are turning their attention back to Harry Potter. That’s why it’s been such a hard decision. I’ll be about 87 years old at the wrap party, but I’ve said yes."

While the series does not yet have a confirmed release date, production is expected to start soon. Details on how the new series will diverge from the original novels or the film adaptations remain scarce. However, Warner Bros. has assured fans that the show will allow for a deeper exploration of Harry's story than what was possible in the two-hour film format. Notably, J.K. Rowling is involved in the show's development, a fact that has sparked both excitement and controversy among fans.
