Helldivers 2 Developers 'Don't, and Shouldn't, Have Final Say' on the Upcoming Movie

Sony’s CES 2025 showcase surprised attendees with several movie and TV adaptations of its PlayStation games, including the announcement of a Helldivers 2 film. This collaboration between Sony Productions and Sony Pictures promises a cinematic take on the popular PlayStation game. While details remain scarce, Asad Qizilbash, head of PlayStation Productions, confirmed the project at the CES event.

Helldivers 2, developed by Arrowhead, draws inspiration from the cult classic Starship Troopers, depicting soldiers defending a fascist Super Earth regime against alien threats while upholding the principles of "Managed Democracy."

Anticipation for the film is high, although many fan questions remain unanswered. Arrowhead’s CCO, Johan Pilestedt, addressed concerns about the developer’s involvement, confirming some input but acknowledging that Arrowhead lacks the expertise for creative control over the film adaptation. Pilestedt stated, “I've been dodging this question. The short answer is yes. The long answer is that we'll see. We are not Hollywood people, and we don't know what it takes to make a movie. And therefore we don't, and shouldn't, have final say.”

The choice of Helldivers 2 for adaptation, given the existence of Starship Troopers, is intriguing. The project appears to be in its early stages, suggesting further announcements may be some time away.

Helldivers 2’s success is undeniable, having achieved the title of fastest-selling PlayStation Studios game, with 12 million copies sold in just 12 weeks. Its recent Illuminate update, introducing a third playable faction, further fueled its popularity.

Sony’s CES announcements also included a Horizon Zero Dawn movie and a Ghost of Tsushima anime series, highlighting the company’s commitment to video game adaptations. This follows the success of HBO’s The Last of Us, with Season 2 slated for an April release.
