If there’s one thing you can count on with a Nintendo console, it’s the inclusion of a Zelda game—and the Nintendo Switch 2 is no different, though it arrived in a form we didn’t quite anticipate. At today’s Nintendo Direct event, it was revealed that Koei Tecmo is developing a new Hyrule Warriors title: a prequel to Tears of the Kingdom titled Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment. This highly anticipated game is set to release this winter.
*Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment* returns to the beloved Hyrule Warriors series, this time featuring the iconic characters from the ancient history segments of *Tears of the Kingdom*. Players will encounter Zelda herself, alongside Rauru, Sonia, and the other keepers of the Secret Stones. The game delves into Zelda’s journey after she travels back in time, where she teams up with the last surviving Zonai—Rauru, his sister Mineru, and his wife Sonia—to combat Ganondorf and his forces.Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 – Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment

The trailer offered a sneak peek at the abilities of these heroes, showcasing Mineru piloting her mechanized suit, Zelda wielding her magical powers, Rauru with his unique sword-spear combination, and brief glimpses of the other Secret Stone bearers.
This marks the third installment in the Hyrule Warriors series, following the original Hyrule Warriors and Hyrule Warriors: Age of Calamity, which served as a prequel to The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. Age of Calamity was particularly noteworthy, offering a fresh perspective on the events leading up to Breath of the Wild. It earned a 9/10 review, praised as “a joy to play and discover” and “a blast from start to finish.”
