Labyrinth Sequel in the Works with Robert Eggers

by Leo Feb 20,2025

Robert Eggers, fresh off his gothic horror film Nosferatu, is set to direct a sequel to the beloved fantasy classic, Labyrinth.

According to Variety, Eggers will pen the screenplay and helm the sequel to Jim Henson's 1986 dark fantasy film starring David Bowie and Jennifer Connelly. He'll collaborate on the script with Sjón, his writing partner on The Northman. While a sequel was previously in development with Scott Derrickson (director of Sinister) attached, a lack of progress since 2023 led TriStar and Jim Henson Pictures to partner with Eggers instead.

PlayThe original Labyrinth, released in 1986, featured Bowie as the Goblin King Jareth, who abducts Connelly's baby brother. Connelly's character then embarks on a perilous journey through a fantastical realm to rescue her sibling, aided by a troupe of Henson's iconic puppets.

This Labyrinth sequel isn't Eggers' only upcoming project. He's also slated to direct a werewolf film titled Werwulf, aiming for a Christmas 2026 release. Details are scarce, but the film is set in 13th-century England and will feature dialogue in Old English. One can safely assume a lycanthropic transformation will occur.

Eggers' Nosferatu, a remake of F.W. Murnau's 1922 silent film, premiered last Christmas. Set in 19th-century Germany, it follows a real estate agent who travels to Transylvania to broker a deal with a mysterious count, only to find himself and his wife, Ellen, ensnared in a terrifying vampiric nightmare.

Nosferatu received four Academy Award nominations: Cinematography, Production Design, Costume Design, and Makeup and Hairstyling. A review of Nosferatu is available here.
