Quick Links

NieR: Automata offers players a vast world to explore, filled with side quests that you can tackle between the main story missions. During your initial playthrough, you might feel like you're missing out on a lot of content, but fear not—the game has a solution.

Once you see the credits roll for the first time, you're not done yet. The journey continues, and it's only after truly completing the game that you'll be able to revisit earlier side quests on the same save profile. Here's how to unlock and utilize the Chapter Select mode to catch everything you might have missed.

How To Unlock Chapter Select In NieR: Automata

Unlocking Chapter Select requires you to reach one of the true endings of NieR: Automata. To do this, you must complete three playthroughs and make a specific choice during the final confrontation of the third playthrough. While these are referred to as playthroughs, some fans call them chapters because each one unfolds a different segment of the overarching narrative.

After the credits roll at the end of a playthrough, save your game and reload that file to continue as the next character. The final playthrough involves switching between multiple characters, and completing it will unlock Chapter Select for your save file.

How Does Chapter Select Work In NieR: Automata

You can access the Chapter Select menu in two ways:

  • From the main menu of your save file when you start the game.
  • At any access point within the game world.

This menu allows you to jump to any chapter in the game, carrying over all your progress, including weapons, levels, and items. When selecting a chapter, you can also choose which character to play as, provided that chapter involves multiple characters.

Keep in mind that completed side quests cannot be replayed, regardless of the chapter you load. If you want to switch chapters mid-play, make sure to save at an access point; otherwise, any progress made in that chapter, including levels and items, won't be saved. Chapter Select is an excellent tool for completing all available content, exploring different choices, and aiming to unlock every ending in the game.
