The original NINJA GAIDEN 2 debuted in 2008 exclusively on the Xbox 360, marking the first Team Ninja game not published by Tecmo. Koei Tecmo later released an enhanced version, NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2, in 2009 for the PS3, which was modified to meet Germany's censorship requirements after the original was banned there due to excessive gore.

In 2013, Team Ninja released NINJA GAIDEN Sigma 2 Plus for the PS Vita, an updated version that reintroduced the gore elements and added new features like Hero mode, Ninja race, and Turbo.
