In a recent update, Nintendo has officially announced a delay for the release of its upcoming live-action *The Legend of Zelda* movie. The news was confirmed through a statement released by Nintendo's iconic game designer, Shigeru Miyamoto, and shared via social media earlier today.

Originally scheduled for March 26, 2027, the film will now arrive on May 7, 2027. This new date was previously held by Marvel’s Avengers: Secret Wars, which has also been rescheduled to December 17, 2027. In his message, Miyamoto emphasized that the extra time will be used to enhance the overall quality of the film.

“This is Miyamoto,” the statement reads. “For production reasons, we are changing the release date of the live-action film of *The Legend of Zelda* to May 7, 2027. It will be some weeks later than the release timing we originally announced, and we will take the extra time to make the film as good as it can be. Thank you for your patience.”

While no further details were provided regarding the specific reasons behind the delay, Nintendo’s decision to move the film into what was once a high-profile Marvel slot allows the company to benefit from a prime theatrical window. This change also avoids potential competition with other major releases previously set around the original March 26 date.

Zelda’s former release date had placed it just one week after the expected debut of *Sonic the Hedgehog 4*, slated for March 19, 2027, and would have directly competed with *Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire*. By shifting to May, Nintendo ensures a more favorable position in the 2027 cinematic calendar.

What We Know About the Zelda Movie So Far

Despite being officially announced back in November 2023, very little is known about the live-action *Legend of Zelda* movie at this stage. As of now, there has been no official word on casting or plot details—leaving fans curious but cautiously optimistic.

The film is being co-produced by Nintendo’s Shigeru Miyamoto and Avi Arad, the former CEO of Marvel Studios. Sony Pictures Entertainment will handle both distribution and co-financing alongside Nintendo. The screenplay is being written by Derek Connolly, known for his work on *Jurassic World*, while *Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes* director Wes Ball is helming the project.

In a May 2024 interview, Ball expressed his vision for the film, stating that an all-motion-capture approach “probably isn’t his choice” following his experience with heavily CG-driven projects. Instead, he envisions *The Legend of Zelda* movie as something “grounded” and “real.”

“I want to fulfill people's greatest desires,” Ball explained. “I know it's important, this franchise, to people, and I want it to be a serious movie—a real movie that can give people an escape… \[It has\] to feel like something real. Something serious and cool but fun and whimsical.”
