Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, the highly anticipated installment in Ubisoft's historical action-adventure franchise, is set to launch on February 14th. This new entry introduces significant changes, particularly to the parkour system and its dual protagonists.

A Refined Parkour Experience:

Ubisoft has significantly overhauled the parkour mechanics. Gone are the days of climbing virtually any surface. Shadows introduces "parkour highways"—designated climbing routes—offering a more structured, yet arguably more refined, climbing experience. While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, though strategic approaches are required. The addition of seamless ledge dismounts, allowing for stylish flips and dives, enhances fluidity and visual appeal. A new prone position also allows for sprinting dives and slides, adding another layer of movement options. The design of these pathways allows for better control over character movement, differentiating the abilities of the two protagonists.

Dual Protagonists, Dual Playstyles:

Shadows features two playable characters with contrasting styles:

  • Naoe: A stealthy shinobi adept at scaling walls and navigating shadows.
  • Yasuke: A powerful samurai excelling in open combat but lacking climbing abilities.

This dual-protagonist approach caters to both fans of classic Assassin's Creed stealth and those who prefer the more RPG-focused combat of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla. The redesigned parkour system, with its focus on "parkour highways," accentuates this difference in playstyles, ensuring each character's strengths are effectively utilized. The game's Associate Game Director, Simon Lemay-Comtois, emphasizes the deliberate design of these pathways, ensuring a balanced and engaging experience.

Release and Competition:

Assassin's Creed Shadows will be available for Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC on February 14th. Its release coincides with other highly anticipated titles, creating a competitive gaming landscape. Whether Shadows can capture the gaming spotlight remains to be seen.
