Monster Hunter Wilds: Unveiling the Oilwell Basin and its Fiery Inhabitants

Monster Hunter Wilds New Monster, Nu Udra of the Oilwell Basin, Revealed by Director

In an exclusive interview with IGN, Monster Hunter Wilds directors Yuya Tokuda and Kaname Fujioka shed light on a new, vertically structured locale: the Oilwell Basin. This unique environment, a departure from the series' typically horizontal landscapes, offers a challenging and visually stunning experience. Fujioka describes a gradation of environments, from oil-slicked swamps at the surface to magma-filled depths. Tokuda adds that the Basin transforms dramatically during the "Plenty" event, resembling an underwater volcanic ecosystem, drawing inspiration from Monster Hunter World's Coral Highlands. The Basin boasts a unique ecosystem teeming with life, despite its seemingly barren appearance.

The Black Flame: Nu Udra

The Oilwell Basin's apex predator, the Nu Udra, is a formidable foe. This colossal, octopus-like monster boasts a flammable, slimy body, utilizing its tentacles to ensnare prey before unleashing devastating fire attacks. Its design, inspired by a demonic aesthetic, is further emphasized by its unique battle music, incorporating elements reminiscent of black magic. The Nu Udra's immunity to Flash Bombs adds another layer of difficulty, forcing hunters to rely on strategy and skill.

Beyond Nu Udra: A Diverse Roster of Threats

The Oilwell Basin isn't solely the domain of the Nu Udra. Hunters will also face the Ajarakan, a fiery, ape-like monster with martial arts-inspired attacks, and the Rompopolo, a bizarre, toxic-gas-spewing creature inspired by mad scientist tropes. Interestingly, despite its eerie appearance, the Rompopolo yields surprisingly "cute" crafting materials.

A familiar face also returns: Gravio, from Monster Hunter Generations Ultimate, makes a comeback, fitting seamlessly into the volcanic environment. Its inclusion was a conscious decision, balancing environmental suitability and gameplay differentiation.
