Chess is one of the world’s oldest and most beloved board games, enjoyed by millions across the globe. You can play offline against an AI on your mobile device or challenge chess masters online. Originating in India around the 6th century AD, chess spread from Asia through the Middle East, North Africa, and Europe.

The game is played on an 8x8 square board, with rows numbered 1 to 8 and columns labeled a to h. The 64 squares alternate between light and dark, and the board is oriented so a light square sits at each player’s right-hand corner.

Each player starts with 16 pieces: 8 Pawns, 2 Knights, 2 Bishops, 2 Rooks, 1 Queen, and 1 King. White always moves first. Players then take turns moving one piece at a time.

There are over 2,000 known chess variants, including Bughouse Chess, Chess960, 3-Check Chess, and Four-Player Chess.
