Rummy 500 (also called Persian Rummy, Pinochle Rummy, 500 Rum, or 500 Rummy) is a popular variation of Rummy. While it shares similarities with the standard Rummy game, it stands out by allowing players to pick up multiple cards from the discard pile, not just the top one.
As per the most widely followed Rummy 500 rules, players earn points for cards they meld and lose points for any unmatched cards (deadwood) left in their hand when another player goes out.
Game Rules:
• The game typically supports 2 to 4 players.
• Play uses one deck of cards including jokers.
• Each player is dealt 7 cards.
• The goal is to be the first player to reach 500 points.
• Even if multiple players hit the target, only the one with the highest score wins.
• Create sets and sequences to score. Sets are 3 or 4 cards of the same rank, and sequences are 3 or more consecutive cards of the same suit. Scoring in Rummy 500 is based on the values of the cards in your valid sets and sequences.
• Each turn involves drawing a card at the start and discarding one at the end.
• During your turn, you may also lay down a new meld or add cards to an existing meld (your own or another player’s). The latter action is known as building.
• Jokers are wild and can substitute for any card in a set or sequence.
• You may pick up one or more cards from the discard pile, but you must use the last card picked in a meld.
• If you take cards from the discard pile, you must use the last card taken to form a meld immediately, or the move is illegal.
• All face cards are worth 10 points. An Ace can be worth 11 points when used in a meld, but carries a 15-point penalty if held in your hand. A Joker takes the value of the card it replaces and also adds a 15-point penalty if caught in your hand.
• The game consists of multiple rounds.
• Scores from each round are cumulative. The first player to reach or exceed 500 points wins.
• The game concludes when the target score is reached. In case of a tie, a playoff determines the pot winner.
