Osmos is back on Google Play with a brand-new port after a brief absence

by Nicholas Jan 23,2025

Osmos, the acclaimed cell-absorbing puzzle game, returns to Android! Previously removed due to playability issues stemming from outdated porting technology, it's back with a completely revamped port from developer Hemisphere Games.

Remember the unique physics-based gameplay? Absorb other microorganisms while avoiding the same fate! This simple yet challenging concept made Osmos a hit, but Android users have been unable to enjoy it until now.

Years after its 2010 release, Osmos is finally available on Google Play with a modern, optimized port. Experience this micro-organic battle royale like never before!

Hemisphere Games explains in a blog post that initial Android development, done with Apportable, stalled after that studio closed. The game's removal was necessary due to incompatibility with current Android systems (it only ran on obsolete 32-bit systems). The new port solves this issue.

Osmos' innovative mechanics have influenced countless subsequent games. Its pre-social media release is almost a missed opportunity; it would likely be a viral sensation on TikTok today.

Osmos offers a nostalgic yet rewarding experience. It represents a time of seemingly limitless mobile game potential, a time many hope to see again.
