Before Fortnite dominated the battle royale scene, Epic Games originally launched it as a cooperative PVE experience called Save the World, where teams fought zombie hordes. Now, Fortnite is revisiting its origins with Lego Fortnite Expeditions - a fresh four-player PVE adventure combining the game's Lego mechanics with Helldivers-style gameplay.
Team-Based Missions with Global Impact
Expeditions introduces mission-based gameplay where squads depart from a central Academy hub to complete combat objectives across three locations. Successful missions contribute to community-wide Team Projects that unlock universal buffs and new mission types. Players can also relax at the Academy and pick up Assignments from familiar Fortnite characters.
Specialized Hero Classes
The mode launches with three upgradable hero archetypes:
- Shadow Caller: Features aerial mobility, explosive ranged attacks, and a Shadow Form escape ability
- Hunter: Equipped with Bull's-eye Blade for damage multipliers and squad-wide accuracy boosts
- Rift Ripper: Offers teleportation, crystal projectiles, and support buffs
Connecting to Fortnite's Larger Universe
Epic Games designed Expeditions as a permanent addition alongside existing Lego modes (Survival and Simulation). Unlike previous standalone Lego experiences, Expeditions directly ties into Fortnite's Battle Royale narrative - pitting players against main antagonist Mask Maker Daigo while teaming with heroes like Jonesy and Hope. The trailer also hints at potential future crossovers with seasonal Battle Royale themes.
This launch coincides with Fortnite's superhero season, following the recent Star Wars Death Star event. Tomorrow (June 18) also brings Blitz Royale - a new 32-player mobile-friendly battle royale variant designed for shorter sessions.
