Baldur’s Gate 3 sees a surge in player numbers following the release of its final major update. Dive in to discover what Patch 8 brings to fans of this iconic RPG.
Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 8 Out Now!
Steam Player Count Soars After Patch 8 Launch
Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has unveiled its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its legendary journey. Released on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, Patch 8 has breathed new life into the game, significantly boosting its player base. Prior to the update, BG3 hovered around 60,000 concurrent players on Steam. Post-patch, that number has soared to over 169,000, pushing it just outside Steam's top 10 most played games.
Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, shared his thoughts on the player surge via Twitter (X) on April 22, crediting the game's robust mod support as a key factor. This allows Larian to shift their focus towards their next ambitious project. It's been confirmed that Larian Studios will move away from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) Universe to explore new horizons.
With Larian stepping away, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, plan to continue the Baldur’s Gate series. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop a Baldur’s Gate 4.
Exciting Additions: 12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!
Patch 8, first teased in a November 2024 Steam blog post, has been a labor of love. It introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and a host of other features. Larian Studios provided a comprehensive breakdown of these updates on the BG3 website. The patch notes are notably longer than those from November 2024, showcasing extensive bug fixes and combat balance adjustments to ensure a polished final experience.
Larian Studios has poured heart and soul into enhancing BG3, evident from the myriad of improvements in this last major patch. While this marks the end of major updates, Larian remains committed to supporting the game's vibrant modding community.
