Borderlands 4 Nears Its Release Date
Photo Mode Arrives in a Post-Launch Update
Borderlands 4 will include a photo mode, although it won't be available until after the game releases. In a June 25 Twitter (X) post, Creative Director Graeme Timmins explained that the feature was originally intended for launch but was deprioritized so the team could focus on refining more essential parts of the game.
In a follow-up comment, Timmins said, "I prioritized polishing other components that are more central to the moment-to-moment experience. We always intended to implement photo mode and had it scheduled, but we needed more time to enhance aspects that impact overall gameplay quality."
Borderlands 3 launched in 2019 with photo mode built-in, though console players received it later. The developers have listened to community feedback from the last game and are doing their best to incorporate fan requests.
More recently, Gearbox CEO Randy Pitchford shared that the team added a highly requested feature close to launch. On June 20, Pitchford announced via Twitter (X) that a combat radar will be available for players seeking assistance during gameplay.
This tool helps players survey the environment and detect enemies across the battlefield. However, it must be enabled in settings since the combat radar is turned off by default.
Pitchford emphasized the value of player feedback and thanked "genuine fans who sincerely want the best for the game and offered helpful suggestions and reasoned arguments."
New Official Story Trailer Unveiled at Borderlands Fan Fest
At the Borderlands Fan Fest on June 21, Gearbox and 2K Games released a new story trailer that explores the game’s setting and plot. The two-minute video gives an overview of the player’s journey across the planet Kairos.
The narrative centers on The Timekeeper and his Order, who enforce a harsh rule over Kairos. As Vault Hunters, players must ignite a rebellion and topple the regime. With support from Claptrap and the Crimson Resistance, they’ll recruit allies, gather resources, and fight to liberate the planet’s inhabitants.

The game adopts a more serious tone compared to Borderlands 3, reducing comedic elements and delivering more grounded dialogue. It will be intriguing to see how the developers transition from their signature “meme-style” humor, especially with a story set in a totalitarian world where choices carry greater weight.
Borderlands 4 launches on September 12, 2025, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 2, and PC. For the latest updates on the game, take a look at our article below.
