Midnight Society, the game development studio co-founded by popular streamer Guy 'Dr. Disrespect' Beahm, has announced that it will be closing its doors after three years of operation. The studio, which also included industry veterans like Robert Bowling and Quinn Delhyo from games such as Call of Duty and Halo, has decided to cancel its upcoming FPS game, Deadrop.
In a post on X, Midnight Society shared the news of its closure, stating, "Today we are announcing Midnight Society will be closing its doors after three incredible years, with an amazing team of over 55 developers." The studio also reached out to the gaming community, asking if any other studios are hiring and could offer employment opportunities to its team members.
Deadrop was envisioned as a free-to-play FPS set in a fictional universe where "the 80s never ended." The game aimed to blend PvPvE elements in an extraction shooter style, featuring characters with Daft Punk-inspired helmets wielding a mix of guns and swords. Although the game was targeting a 2024 release, it missed its deadline, leading to the eventual shutdown of the project.
Midnight Society parted ways with Beahm in 2024 following revelations that the streamer had exchanged messages with a minor through Twitch's Whispers feature, some of which were deemed inappropriate. Despite this split, the studio continued development on Deadrop until its closure in 2025.
The closure of Midnight Society adds to the growing list of studios facing shutdowns or layoffs, a trend that has affected major companies like Ubisoft, BioWare, Phoenix Labs, and many others amidst challenging times in the gaming industry.
