FromSoftware has recently unveiled additional details about their upcoming Switch 2 exclusive, The Duskbloods. The collaboration with Nintendo has influenced not only the game's style but also the character design of the hub area's keeper, introducing a more whimsical element.
During the Switch 2 Direct, a trailer concluded with a captivating shot of a winged rat adorned with glowing glyphs, sparking curiosity among fans. This character, as revealed by director Hidetaka Miyazaki in an interview with Nintendo, serves a role akin to the fire keepers in the Dark Souls series. The winged rat will stay in the hub area, offering players advice and guidance throughout their journey.
Miyazaki highlighted the Nintendo-inspired approach to the character's design, stating, "I suppose you could say we tried doing something a little Nintendo-esque in the spirit of the partnership." He further elaborated on the character's unique charm, saying, "We tried something cute for a change. Although I will say this character is actually an elderly gentleman (laughter)."
FromSoftware's hub characters have traditionally been pivotal to the player's experience, providing not just guidance but also essential power-ups. Iconic figures like Melina, the Maiden in Black, and the Doll have been integral to players' journeys in past games. As The Duskbloods introduces a PvPvE element, the role of the winged rat in providing advice and guidance remains a tantalizing mystery.
Miyazaki teased that FromSoftware is experimenting with "a lot of new and interesting ideas" for The Duskbloods, suggesting that players should brace for surprises when the game launches on Nintendo Switch 2 in 2026.
