Dynasty Warriors: Origins Rises from the Ashes of a Canceled Predecessor

Omega Force's Dynasty Warriors: Origins, launching January 17, 2025, boasts a thrilling hack-and-slash experience set against the backdrop of China's Three Kingdoms period. However, the game's creation involved a surprising twist: the cancellation of its planned tenth mainline installment.

The decision to scrap Dynasty Warriors 10 stemmed from a significant technological leap. Witnessing the capabilities of the PlayStation 5 and other contemporary consoles, the developers recognized the potential for a more ambitious and strategically refined game. This led to a paradigm shift in their approach, ultimately resulting in Dynasty Warriors: Origins.

While abandoning Dynasty Warriors 10 proved challenging, the team salvaged key elements. Producer Masamichi Oba, in an interview translated by SiliconEra, revealed that the canceled game, similar in structure to Dynasty Warriors 7, inspired features in Origins, including the free-roaming map and a more richly detailed narrative exploring the Three Kingdoms era. Producer Tomohiko Sho emphasized that the shift allowed them to create the best possible Dynasty Warriors experience using the power of modern hardware.

Dynasty Warriors: Origins retains the series' signature fast-paced combat, but with enhancements born from the lessons learned during the development and subsequent cancellation of its predecessor. The game places players in the role of an amnesiac protagonist, thrust into the heart of the Three Kingdoms conflict. Deluxe Edition players have already experienced this exciting evolution; the rest of the world will soon follow.
