Final Fantasy 9 has launched its 25th anniversary website, teasing multiple upcoming projects. Here's what we know about the celebrated RPG's anniversary plans and potential future developments.
Final Fantasy 9 Marks Quarter Century Milestone
Official 25th Anniversary Website Goes Live

Square Enix has unveiled a dedicated website honoring Final Fantasy 9's 25th anniversary. The site mentions preparations for "various commemorative projects including merchandise and collaborations."
The anniversary collection currently features character figures, plush toys, vinyl records, soundtracks, art books, and other collectibles. The company promises additional announcements in the coming months leading up to the anniversary.
Originally released on July 7, 2000 for PlayStation, Final Fantasy 9 has sold over 8.9 million copies globally. The game received numerous re-releases, including a 2012 special edition bundle, mobile remasters in 2016, PlayStation 4 compatibility in 2017, and multi-platform availability in 2019.
Potential Remake and Stalled Animated Adaptation

The anniversary launch has reignited rumors about a potential FF9 remake. Following the commercial success of Final Fantasy VII's modern reboots, many fans believe FF9 - ranked #4 in NHK's 2019 poll of Japan's favorite FF games - deserves similar treatment. While the anniversary site doesn't explicitly confirm a remake, the game's enduring popularity keeps hopes alive.
Also missing from updates is the previously announced FF9 animated series revealed in 2021. Titled "Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy," the show was planned as a sequel following Vivi's descendants. However, production stalled after distributor Cyber Group Studios filed for bankruptcy in October 2024. Several media companies, including United Smile and Newen Studios, have expressed interest in reviving the project.
