Fincher, Pitt Team Up for 'Hollywood' Sequel on Netflix

by Olivia Apr 20,2025

David Fincher and Brad Pitt are set to collaborate once again on a sequel to Quentin Tarantino's Once Upon a Time in Hollywood. According to reports from The Playlist, this unexpected project is slated for Netflix, bolstering Fincher's ongoing partnership with the streaming service. If all goes as planned, the film will see Brad Pitt reprising his role as stuntman Cliff Booth.

The journey of the script into Fincher's hands is intriguing. Originally, it was an evolved take on a project called The Movie Critic, which Tarantino had considered for his final film before shelving it. Rather than letting the concept disappear, Tarantino has handed it over to Fincher to bring to life.

The Playlist reports that Netflix has acquired the screenplay for $20 million, with an anticipated budget of $200 million. Filming is scheduled to commence in California in July. While no other casting has been confirmed, Leonardo DiCaprio is not expected to return as Rick Dalton. Both Fincher and Pitt are reportedly clearing their schedules to focus solely on this sequel.

Deadline has confirmed these developments, noting that Pitt obtained Tarantino's approval to share the script with Fincher, leading to this ambitious project.

Quentin Tarantino's Most Notable Abandoned (Or Delayed) Projects

The sequel has significant expectations to meet, especially given the conclusive nature of the original film's ending. However, the world of Once Upon a Time in Hollywood has been further explored in other media.

In 2021, Tarantino released a novelization that delved deeper into the film's depiction of 1960s California and provided new insights into Cliff Booth's backstory, including the mystery surrounding his wife's death. This novel will likely gain added significance with the release of the sequel, though its exact impact on the new film remains to be seen.
