Are you loving Elden Ring Nightreign but finding the routine of three-night boss cycles and recurring Everdark Sovereigns a bit monotonous? Rest easy, Nightfarer, as a brand-new, ultra-challenging game mode may be on the horizon to revitalize Nightreign’s core gameplay.
This newly discovered mode, dubbed Deep of Night, was uncovered by dataminers and appears to function as an "endless" mode featuring skill-based matchmaking. Unlike standard Nightreign, players cannot select their target boss; instead, one is assigned randomly. With each victory, your "Depth" rating rises, increasing the difficulty. The game aims to match you with other players of similar Depth, provided the queue time remains reasonable.
Data suggests five distinct Depths, each with 999 rating tiers. Defeating bosses elevates your Depth, while losing runs causes regression. Notably, once you reach Depth 2, you cannot drop back to Depth 1. It remains unclear if this restriction applies to all levels or serves as a mechanism to prevent experienced players from being paired with newcomers.

Deep of Night introduces several other significant changes. Certain bosses are "magmafied," meaning they are encased in magma, likely making them tougher—perhaps too tough for casual encounters. New weapon effects and stronger weapons with enhanced buffs (and accompanying drawbacks) have also been added. Furthermore, players gain access to three additional relic slots beyond the original three, exclusive to Deep of Night. These new relics, also datamined, offer powerful buffs but may include counterbalancing penalties.
Overall, this mode promises an intriguing twist that could keep Nightreign engaging for the foreseeable future. Although the community remains active, interest has waned since launch, particularly as the rotation of Everdark bosses has become repetitive. FromSoftware recently announced the next Everdark boss, Caligo, arriving tomorrow evening.

At launch, we rated Elden Ring Nightreign 7/10, noting that while it excels as a three-player co-op experience when played as intended, solo play is poorly balanced. The game has since received a duos mode and has sold five million copies as of July.
