Nintendo confirms it's prepared to tackle Switch 2 supply shortages and deter scalpers, stating: "We're taking proactive measures."
During a recent earnings briefing, Nintendo president Shuntaro Furukawa addressed concerns about avoiding the supply chain issues that plagued the original Switch's 2017 launch.
"Drawing from our accumulated experience regarding scalpers and similar challenges, we're implementing comprehensive countermeasures," Furukawa explained to Nikkei (via VGC's translation). "Our preparations are underway."
What exactly might these preparations entail? Primarily, large-scale manufacturing. Nintendo previously emphasized that mass production is crucial for outpacing scalpers.
The original Switch saw constrained availability at launch, fueling scalper activity and price inflation. Furukawa assures a different scenario for the successor's rollout in July 2024.
"Combating resale fundamentally requires meeting consumer demand through adequate production - a strategy unchanged since last year," Furukawa stated.
"We're also evaluating additional regional measures within legal frameworks.
"While semiconductor shortages previously hindered Switch production, this supply issue has now stabilized. Component availability shouldn't significantly impact our next-gen console's manufacturing."
Nintendo will host a dedicated Switch 2 Direct presentation on April 2, followed by global hands-on preview events.
Commenting on February 4, 2025, Furukawa downplayed speculation that declining Switch sales indicate consumers waiting for Switch 2.
"Purchase postponement appears minimal," Furukawa noted. "The eighth year remains steady, though slightly below projections."
Additionally, Furukawa confirmed ongoing Switch support post-Switch 2 launch "based on consumer demand." Major 2025 titles Pokémon Legends: Z-A and Metroid Prime 4: Beyond will still release for the original platform.
