The highly anticipated God of War live-action TV series is undergoing a complete creative reboot. Several key producers have departed, prompting a fresh start for the project. Read on for details on the departures and the future plans of Sony and Amazon.
God of War TV Series: A Creative Reset
Production Continues, Not Cancelled
Recent reports confirm that the God of War TV series adaptation is restarting from the beginning. Showrunner Rafe Judkins and executive producers Hawk Ostby and Mark Fergus have left the project, despite reportedly completing multiple scripts. Sony and Amazon have opted for a different creative vision.
However, the project is not cancelled. Cory Barlog (Santa Monica Studio's Creative Director), Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan (PlayStation Productions), Roy Lee (Vertigo), and Yumi Yang (Santa Monica Studio) will remain as executive producers. A new showrunner, producers, and writers will be sought to redefine the series' direction.
Future Adaptations Despite Setbacks
The Amazon and Sony partnership for the God of War TV series was announced in 2022 on a PlayStation podcast, following the success of the 2018 God of War game reboot. This initiative reflects Sony's broader strategy to adapt its popular video game franchises for film and television, a strategy that led to the formation of PlayStation Productions in 2019. This includes the Netflix adaptation of Horizon Zero Dawn, among other projects.
Sony's successful video game adaptations already released include Uncharted (2022), The Last of Us (2023 – with a second season slated for 2025), Gran Turismo (2023), and Twisted Metal (2024). Further projects in development include Gravity Rush, Ghost of Tsushima, Days Gone, and the Until Dawn film (set for release on April 25, 2025).
