Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 has achieved remarkable success, selling over a million copies, as announced by publisher Kepler Interactive. The debut RPG from developer Sandfall Interactive initially soared with 500,000 copies sold within the first 24 hours of its release, and has now impressively doubled that figure.
"And here we are. Three days after launch. One million copies sold. Thank you for believing in Clair Obscur: Expedition 33," the studio said via a social media post over the weekend.
The game's success extends beyond sales. According to SteamDB, Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 reached a concurrent peak of 121,422 players on Steam over the weekend. This number surpasses the concurrent peak of any other game from the renowned RPG developer Atlus, including the popular Metaphor: ReFantazio, which launched in October 2024 and achieved a peak of 85,961 players. It's important to note that these concurrent records do not represent the full scope of the game's player base. Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was also released on PS5, PC, and Xbox Series X and S, and was available on day one through the Xbox Game Pass Ultimate subscription. This suggests that the actual number of players who engaged with the game over the weekend is likely much higher, indicating the game's widespread popularity.
In IGN's 9/10 review of Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, it was hailed as a "modern RPG classic." Crafted by the newly established studio Sandfall Interactive, this turn-based RPG draws significant inspiration from genre classics. The narrative follows a group of Expeditioners in a post-apocalyptic world, where a giant entity known as The Paintress marks a new number annually, erasing anyone older than that age. In Clair Obscur: Expedition 33, players join this crew on a mission to traverse the continent and ultimately destroy The Paintress.
