Hollow Knight: Silksong - Sea of Sorrow Expansion Revealed, Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of Original Hollow Knight Also in Development

by Sadie Apr 04,2026

Hollow Knight: Silksong's first major expansion has been unveiled by developer Team Cherry.

Teased for 2026, Hollow Knight: Silksong – Sea of Sorrow delivers new regions, formidable bosses, and powerful new tools as “Hornet’s journey continues in our nautical-themed expansion, available at no cost to all players next year.”

Additional details are anticipated shortly before release, though no exact launch date has been confirmed. This timing shouldn’t come as a shock, given that Silksong’s original release was also announced just weeks before its debut, following one of gaming’s most prolonged development delays.

Alongside the DLC reveal, Team Cherry confirmed that a Nintendo Switch 2 Edition of the original Hollow Knight is currently in development. This enhanced version includes “all the updates and improvements introduced through Silksong on the platform: smooth high frame-rate modes, sharper resolutions, and a range of new visual enhancements.”

Even better? Players who already own Hollow Knight on Switch will be able to upgrade to this next-gen version at no additional cost.

The Australian studio will also be rolling out updates to all existing versions of the original Metroidvania-style action game, introducing new features and fixing long-standing issues. Players on PC have already begun experiencing some of these changes.

“PC players can already enjoy many of these updates through the public-beta branches on Steam and GOG, which are now live,” a Team Cherry blog post explains. “This includes full support for 16:10 and 21:9 aspect ratios for those using Steam Decks or ultrawide monitors.”

As part of the DLC announcement, Team Cherry shared that Hollow Knight: Silksong has sold over 7 million copies since its September launch, with millions more enjoying it through Xbox Game Pass.

“It’s an astonishing number of players—far beyond what we ever imagined (enough to overwhelm all storefronts!),” the team said. “Seeing the community grow, discovering the incredible fan art, mods, creative strategies, and the strong support among players as they overcome the game’s challenges has been incredibly fulfilling for us. Your ongoing passion continues to drive us forward as we expand the world even further.”

Now is a perfect moment to dive into both Hollow Knight titles. IGN’s Hollow Knight review earned a 9.4. We wrote: “Hollow Knight’s immersive world and deep, rewarding gameplay will keep you exploring its underground caves for countless hours.”

Similarly, IGN’s Hollow Knight: Silksong review scored 9/10. We said: “Hollow Knight: Silksong is brimming with precise platforming, captivating exploration, and intense combat that remains unapologetically tough—but in the best possible way.”
