James Gunn, the head of DC Studios, is known for collaborating with his close circle of actors. Now, a star from Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy confirms discussions about joining the DC Universe.
The DC Universe (DCU) aims to build a successful shared universe, learning from the missteps of the previous DC Extended Universe (DCEU). While the DCEU had its successes, inconsistencies and studio interference hampered its overall coherence. Gunn, celebrated for his Guardians of the Galaxy films, hopes to steer the DCU clear of similar problems, potentially bringing familiar faces along.
According to Agents of Fandom, Pom Klementieff, who played Mantis in Guardians of the Galaxy, recently reiterated discussions with Gunn about a DCU role. At San Antonio's Superhero Comic Con, when asked about a desired DCU character, Klementieff playfully responded, "Do you really think I’m going to answer this question?” However, she confirmed Gunn has a specific character in mind.
Klementieff expressed her desire to continue working with Gunn: "I just want to keep working with James, so we’re going to keep trying to find ways to do that. Yes, we’ve been talking about one specific character, but I can’t talk about that right now." She also fondly recalled her Guardians of the Galaxy experience, highlighting her good fortune in working on the Marvel franchise.
While Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 concluded with the team's dissolution, Klementieff remains open to reprising Mantis: "I'm always open to it, I love the character. I'm sure the fans would love to see it, but I don't know. It depends on the project."
This confirms previous statements about her potential DCU involvement. Gunn himself addressed online speculation, clarifying that the reports of her casting in the Superman film were inaccurate. He did, however, confirm discussions with Klementieff about a specific DCU role unrelated to the Superman project. Details remain undisclosed.
Gunn's tendency to cast familiar faces, including family members, has drawn criticism. However, many filmmakers employ similar practices, and the appropriateness of this critique is debatable. Ultimately, Klementieff's suitability for the role should be judged on her performance, not preconceived notions.
The Guardians of the Galaxy films are streaming on Disney Plus.
