"Killer Instinct Gold Joins Nintendo Switch Online Library"

by Allison May 19,2025

Killer Instinct Gold has been added to the Nintendo Switch Online library, bringing the iconic Nintendo 64 game to modern players. This latest addition joins the original Killer Instinct, expanding the retro gaming catalog available to Nintendo Switch Online Expansion Pack subscribers.

Originally released in 1996, Killer Instinct Gold is a port of the arcade fighter Killer Instinct 2, developed by the renowned British studio Rare. At the time, Rare was a key second-party developer for Nintendo, known for creating classics like Donkey Kong Country, Goldeneye 007, and Perfect Dark. In Killer Instinct Gold, players can choose from a roster of 10 fierce fighters and engage in various game modes, boasting "hundreds of thousands of moves and killer Combos at your fingertips."

Now owned by Microsoft, the Killer Instinct franchise continues to make its mark on the Nintendo Switch, with Killer Instinct Gold being the latest Xbox Game Studios title to join the platform. Since the release of the Xbox One launch title Killer Instinct in 2013, there have been no announcements regarding a new sequel to the series.

The 10 Best Fighting Games

View 11 ImagesNintendo Switch Online is a subscription-based service that enhances the gaming experience on the Nintendo Switch. It offers online multiplayer capabilities, allowing players to connect and play with friends, alongside a rich collection of classic games from the NES, SNES, Game Boy, Nintendo 64, and soon, the new GameCube libraries with the launch of the Nintendo Switch 2. A free seven-day trial is available for those interested in trying out the service.

Preorders for the Nintendo Switch 2 opened at the end of April, with the console priced at $449.99. The demand was overwhelming, leading Nintendo to issue a warning to U.S. customers who preordered through the My Nintendo Store that release date delivery might not be guaranteed. However, Doug Bowser, President of Nintendo of America, expressed confidence to IGN that the company would have sufficient units to meet consumer demand "through the holidays."
