Killzone Composer Reflects on Series' Future: 'Sense That People Want More Casual, Quick Games'

by Penelope May 07,2025

The beloved Killzone franchise from Sony has been on hiatus for quite some time, but recent comments from Killzone composer Joris de Man have reignited hopes for its revival. In an interview with VideoGamer during the PlayStation: The Concert Tour, de Man expressed his support for bringing back the iconic series.

"I know that there have been petitions for it," de Man stated. "I think it's tricky because, I can't speak for Guerrilla or anything... I don't know if it will ever happen. I hope it will because I think it is quite an iconic franchise, but I also think it kind of has to take into account the sensitivities and the shift in what people want because it is quite bleak in some ways."

The form in which Killzone could make a comeback remains open to interpretation. De Man suggested that a remastered collection might be more successful than a brand new entry, considering the current gaming landscape.

"I think a remastered one would be successful, I don't know if a new game would be as much," de Man explained. "I don't know if people have moved on from it and want something. I don't know sometimes I get the sense that people want something a bit more casual, a bit more quick."

Killzone games are known for their slower-paced, weightier shooting mechanics, contrasting with faster-paced titles like Call of Duty. Killzone 2, in particular, was criticized for its input lag on the PlayStation 3, which affected its responsiveness. The series is also recognized for its dark, gritty, and atmospheric visuals and tone.

Despite these characteristics, recent comments from Guerrilla, the Sony-owned developer behind Killzone, suggest that the studio has shifted its focus to the Horizon series. It's been over a decade since the release of Killzone Shadow Fall, yet the prospect of reviving Killzone—or another of Sony's PlayStation shooter franchises—remains appealing to many fans. With de Man's endorsement, supporters of the franchise have another ally in their quest for its return.
