If you've been keeping an eye on the latest global game releases, you might be disappointed to learn about another title that's currently out of reach. Medabot Survivors is set to launch on February 10th, bringing the beloved robot role-playing series back to mobile devices. However, it's launching exclusively in Japan for iOS and Android, leaving fans elsewhere eagerly waiting.
This news was first reported by Gematsu. For those of us who grew up in the wake of Pokémon's massive success, Medabots might ring a bell. In the rush to capitalize on the merchandising frenzy following Pokémon, many Japanese franchises were brought to the West. While Digimon managed to carve out its own niche (and some might argue, even surpassed Pokémon in certain aspects), Medabots never quite managed to capture the same level of popularity outside Japan.
In its home country, however, Medabots has thrived as a major franchise. It's no surprise that the series is now venturing into the Survivors-like genre, a trend that's catching on like wildfire globally. Unfortunately, for now, fans outside Japan will have to wait patiently as Medabot Survivors remains exclusive to the Japanese market.
Surviving the Survivors
While the term "Survivors-like" might evoke thoughts of the genre's flagship title, Vampire Survivors, this style of gameplay has been around for much longer. The launch of Medabot Survivors is not only a treat for fans but also a fascinating case study in the spread of this genre worldwide.
Having gained some insight into the Japanese gaming scene, I can tell you there are numerous excellent releases that, sadly, might never make it to other regions. If Medabot Survivors proves to be a hit, there's hope that it might eventually be released globally.
