Switch 2 Joy-Cons May Function as Computer Mice: Evidence from Shipping Manifests
Recent circumstantial evidence suggests the Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Cons might offer an unconventional feature: mouse-like functionality. While the practicality of this mode for game developers remains uncertain, it aligns with Nintendo's history of innovative controller designs.
The evidence comes from Famiboards user LiC, who analyzed Vietnamese customs data related to a suspected Nintendo parts supplier. This data, previously the source of numerous Switch 2 rumors, revealed mentions of polyethylene (PE) adhesive tape described as "mouse soles"—a term for the bottom of computer mice—intended "to stick to game console handles." This strongly implies a mouse-like capability for the new controllers.
Two "mouse sole" model numbers, LG7 and SML7, were referenced. These numbers haven't been found in public component databases, hinting at newly developed products. The listed size (90 x 90mm) is large enough to cover the back of the Joy-Cons, suggesting potential trimming during assembly.
Not a Novel Concept: Lenovo Legion GO Precedent
The idea of a handheld console controller doubling as a mouse isn't entirely new. The Lenovo Legion GO, released in 2023, already features this capability with its right controller. When rotated sideways, it functions as a mouse, aided by a supplied plastic piece for smoother surface movement. The Legion GO also utilizes magnetic rails for controller attachment—a feature rumored for the Switch 2. These similarities suggest the Legion GO might offer a preview of Nintendo's hybrid console design.
