The very first moments of the Nintendo Switch 2 announcement trailer reveal a striking transformation: the new console is noticeably larger than its predecessor. As the old Joy-Con detach from the original Switch, the tablet section expands and morphs into its upgraded form. This substantial size increase suggests that Nintendo is shifting further from the compact handhelds of its past, embracing the trend of larger portable devices like the Steam Deck and iPad.
But just how much bigger is the Switch 2? While Nintendo has yet to release official size dimensions, we can make educated estimates based on the trailer and a recent leak. At CES 2025, we had the chance to explore a Switch 2 mock-up created by peripheral designer Genki. Although we couldn't verify its accuracy at the time, the new trailer showcases a console that closely matches the Genki design. Thus, our measurements from CES are likely close to the final dimensions of the Switch 2.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Size
Our estimates suggest that the **Switch 2 features an 8-inch screen**. This measurement represents the diagonal of the actual display (excluding the bezels), a universal standard for screen sizes. This aligns with a rumor reported early in 2024. Based on this, **we expect the display to be around 177mm wide and 99mm tall**.
If accurate, this would mean the Switch 2's screen is almost 30% larger diagonally than the original console's 6.2-inch LCD display, and **66% larger in overall area**. This is a significant upgrade. While bigger isn't always better, a larger, high-quality display could enhance the gaming experience on the Switch 2.
Compared to other handhelds, the Switch 2's screen will be 45% larger diagonally and 111% larger in surface area than the Switch Lite's 5.5-inch LCD touchscreen. Against the Switch OLED's 7-inch display, the Switch 2 will be 14% larger diagonally and 30% larger in total area.
In today's market, the Switch 2 competes with portable PCs like the Steam Deck. The original Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED have 7-inch and 7.4-inch screens, respectively, with a 16:10 aspect ratio. Despite this, the Switch 2's 8-inch screen will still be 8% larger diagonally and 11% larger in overall area than the Steam Deck OLED's display.
Nintendo Switch 2 Overall Console Size
Given the larger screen, the overall size of the Switch 2 console has increased as well. The original Switch already required sizable pockets, and the Switch 2 might only fit in cargo pants pockets or bags.
Our measurements of the Genki mock-up at CES indicate that the Switch 2 is approximately **265mm long and 115mm tall**, including the Joy-Cons. This compares to the original Switch's dimensions of 239mm long and 102mm tall. If our figures are correct, the **Switch 2 is approximately 25% larger than its predecessor**.
These measurements would also make the Switch 2 about 61% larger than the Switch Lite (208mm x 91mm), and roughly 12% smaller than the much larger Steam Deck (298mm x 117mm).
We couldn't measure the depth precisely, but it seems the Switch 2's thickness will be similar to the original's half-inch depth. Thus, while the overall footprint is larger, the thickness remains comparable.
Nintendo Switch 2 Joy-Con Size
The Switch 2 reveal trailer shows the Joy-Con controllers retaining a similar width to the original but growing taller. Using our method of scaling images, we estimate that the new **Switch 2 Joy-Cons are likely to be around 32mm wide and 115mm tall** – the same width as the original (excluding the slot system), and 13mm taller to match the new console's size. If these figures hold true, the **new Joy-Con are approximately 13% larger** than the original.
Nintendo Switch 2 Screen Unit Size
With the Joy-Con dimensions established, we can estimate the size of the screen unit. We believe the **Switch 2 screen unit is 200mm long and 115mm tall**. This is around **31% larger than the original Switch** version.
This size accommodates the 8-inch 16:9 screen, suggesting an approximate 11mm bezel on either side and an 8mm bezel along the top and bottom. This is slimmer on the sides than the original Switch, with similar top and bottom bezels.
Remember, these are estimates based on our best efforts, and they may differ from Nintendo's official dimensions. However, given our experience with the Genki mock-up, we're confident these figures are close. We anticipate a console roughly 25% larger than the original Switch when we finally go hands-on later this year.
