"Oblivion Remastered's Ghostly Horse 'Spookmane' Triggers Widespread Spectral Search"

by Savannah May 21,2025

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered is brimming with eerie elements like skeletons, spirits, and zombies, yet a mysterious 'ghost horse' has surfaced, unseen in both the original 2006 release and the 2025 remaster. The discovery was first shared on Reddit by user TaricIsNotASupport, who stumbled upon what appears to be a spectral horse while exploring the game.

Uhhhh, guys, is this new?

"So I was crafting stupid spells in Frostcrag Spire, as it’s possibly my favorite way to have fun in this game," TaricIsNotASupport recounted. "However, this time when I left the Cosy Chaos Spire that has divided this community so very much, I noticed something suuuuuuper strange in the distance. I did as any of us of the right mind would do and B-lined it over there like a maniac. To my amazement, there was this spectral horse with no name."

Despite thousands of hours logged in the original Oblivion and over a hundred in the Remaster, this was TaricIsNotASupport's first encounter with the spectral steed. Unsure whether it was a new addition or something previously overlooked, TaricIsNotASupport turned to the community for answers, sparking an online ghost hunt. Searches through the Unofficial Elder Scrolls Pages yielded no mention of such a spectral mount in the original game.

To the people asking if I can ride or interact with the spooky horse, yes! 1/2

Could this be a mod? TaricIsNotASupport clarified that they were playing on PlayStation 5, where mods are not available. They even shared a video of their character riding the ghostly horse, which behaves like any other in-game horse, capable of fast travel and stabling. "By all accounts, it’s now my steed!" TaricIsNotASupport exclaimed.

Speculation ranges from this being a glitch, perhaps triggered by a misfired spell, to a secret addition by the developers, Bethesda and Virtuos. The community is abuzz with theories, with some, like ClaymoreBeatz, suggesting it could be a result of a spell effect gone awry. "Very weird, the wiki says there's only 2 unique horses, Shadowmere and unicorns," ClaymoreBeatz noted. "And there's no horse mods that I can see that do this so I highly doubt you're lying about not being on PC. This is probably some sort of glitch that the new Remastered has or a glitched magical effect."

I was asked if Spookmane* can be buffed and if it stays spectral; the answer is yes!

While some hope it's a hidden feature added by the developers, no clear method to replicate the ghost horse has been found. In the absence of an official name, TaricIsNotASupport has dubbed their spectral companion 'Spookmane,' vowing to continue their adventures together. Whether a one-time glitch, a secret, or a bug, Spookmane has certainly captured the imagination of the Oblivion community.

"This creature might be my favorite new friend I’ve made," TaricIsNotASupport said. "Spookmane, you’re glorious and I love you."

Oblivion Remastered, crafted by Virtuos using Unreal Engine 5, boasts significant visual and gameplay enhancements. Running at 4K resolution and 60 frames per second, the remaster features revamped leveling systems, character creation, combat animations, and in-game menus. New dialogue, a proper third-person view, and advanced lip sync technology enhance the experience. Fans have praised these changes, with some suggesting that the game might be better described as a remake. Bethesda, however, has clarified their decision to label it a remaster.

With the game now released, players are sharing tips, such as completing Kvatch early to avoid the level scaling challenges, and reports of adventurous players exploring beyond Cyrodiil into Valenwood, Skyrim, and Hammerfell, the rumored setting for The Elder Scrolls VI.
