Pokémon Card Market Shifts: Top Gainers and Losers - May 9

by Nora May 25,2025

Another week brings another rollercoaster ride in the Pokémon single card market as trainers eagerly await the release of Destined Rivals. Fortunately, the Black Bolt and White Flare Pokémon Center preorders managed to dodge a bot attack this time around.

The most significant drop this week is Greninja ex 214/167, which has plummeted by nearly half its value since the start of the year. We're also witnessing notable price reductions across cards from the Obsidian Flames and 151 expansions. On the flip side, Dragonite V from Evolving Skies has almost doubled in value since the beginning of the year, its stunning artwork making it a card that was always undervalued.

Charizard V Alt Art continues to impress with its depiction of a battle against Venusaur, and it's steadily climbing in value. Meanwhile, Rayquazza VMAX Alt Art is soaring, having gained an impressive $100 since the start of the year. Let's delve into the week's biggest climbers and crashers in the Pokémon TCG.

Pokémon Card Crashes

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyWhile we're seeing a significant uptick in Sword and Shield era Pokémon Cards, Scarlet and Violet series cards are returning to more realistic prices.

Alakazam ex SIR from 151 is a stunning card, now 34% cheaper than at the beginning of March. There's no reason not to add Uri Geller's Grandad to your collection this year.

Bulbasaur was my first starter in Pokémon Blue, so Bulbasaur IR holds a special place in my heart. It has dropped by a substantial 52% since mid-March, making it a must-have at its current price.

Moving on to Obsidian Flames, Ninetales IR remains one of the set's best cards. If you're a fan, now's the time to grab it, as it's crashed by 40% since February, now reasonably priced at $18.17.

The biggest crasher this month is Greninja ex SIR, which was once poised to be the most expensive Scarlet and Violet card. However, Prismatic Evolutions escalated the FOMO, leading to its current price of $275—a far cry from its $411.62 price tag at the end of February.

Pokémon Card Climbers

IGN Photo Composite / The Pokémon CompanyTurning to this week's climbers, Rayquazza VMAX Alt Art remains a coveted card from the Sword and Shield era. Already valued at over $500, it's now at $649.99 and shows no signs of slowing down. It could potentially reach $1,000 in a few years, so grab one if you can.

There's never enough love for Kanto in my book, and Charizard V Alt Art delivers with its dynamic battle against Venusaur. Its unique angle and sense of motion set it apart from static images common in earlier Pokémon cards. It's gained $40 since January and could surpass $200 by year's end.

Pokémon Card Sealed Boosters

For those dedicated to pulling chase cards, here's what's currently in stock. Be wary of prices above MSRP; it's a strange time for Pokémon trainers, so don't overpay.

Here's the Pokémon TCG full Release Schedule for this year, ensuring you don't miss any releases. While buying singles is the most cost-effective way to collect, remember, you don't have to "Catch 'Em All!"
