Ryan Reynolds has cast doubt on Deadpool joining either the Avengers or X-Men, suggesting team membership would mark "the end" for the character.
Despite Deadpool & Wolverine's massive success and Wade Wilson's Avengers obsession in the film, Reynolds hinted Marvel Studios shouldn't permanently integrate the Merc with Mouth with established teams like The Avengers or X-Men for next year's Avengers: Doomsday.
Last month's Avengers: Doomsday cast announcement prominently featured X-Men veterans. Kelsey Grammer (Beast), Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Ian McKellen (Magneto), Alan Cumming (Nightcrawler), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), and James Marsden (Cyclops) are all confirmed – raising questions about the film possibly being a stealth Avengers vs. X-Men adaptation. Grammer recently made his MCU debut in The Marvels' post-credits scene.
While Channing Tatum's Gambit appeared on the cast list, Reynolds' Deadpool was conspicuously absent. The actor reinforced this exclusion during a Time interview: "If Deadpool becomes an Avenger or X-Man, we're at the end. That's wish fulfillment you can't give him."
Reynolds did suggest supporting appearances could work, citing Wesley Snipes' well-received Blade cameo in Deadpool & Wolverine as precedent.
Regarding Deadpool's future, Reynolds revealed he's developing something new involving an "ensemble" while keeping specifics close to his chest: "I'm writing something that's... an ensemble. But I like keeping him isolated."
This could mean another cameo-heavy Deadpool film, potentially featuring Snipes' Blade or Tatum's Gambit returning alongside Deadpool & Wolverine's other surprise appearances (Jennifer Garner's Elektra, Dafne Keen's X-23).
