Will Smith has opened up about his decision to decline a role in Christopher Nolan's Inception, marking the first time he has publicly discussed the matter.
The 2010 sci-fi heist film Inception explores the concept of infiltrating dreams to manipulate the subconscious. As the story unfolds across multiple layers of reality, a team engages in corporate espionage within a target's mind, only for the mission to descend into a surreal nightmare.
Nolan reportedly approached Brad Pitt for the lead role first, followed by Smith, before ultimately casting Leonardo DiCaprio. Now, fifteen years after the film's release, Smith is sharing his reasons for turning down the project.
“I don’t believe I’ve ever mentioned this publicly before,” Smith admitted during an interview with UK radio station Kiss Xtra.
“Chris Nolan initially presented Inception to me, and I simply couldn’t grasp the concept. I’ve never voiced that until now. Reflecting on it, these types of films that venture into alternate realities are challenging to pitch effectively. Still, both rejections weigh on me.”
Smith’s reference to “both rejections” includes his widely known decision to pass on playing Neo in 1999’s The Matrix, a topic he has addressed repeatedly over the years. Now, with the revelation that he also declined Inception due to struggling with the premise, it adds to the list of major films Smith regrets missing out on throughout his career. Inception went on to earn a staggering $839 million worldwide and remains one of Leonardo DiCaprio’s most iconic roles.

Inception’s spinning totem ending is famous for leaving audiences questioning whether the events were real or a dream. In 2023, Nolan clarified that the key takeaway is that Leo DiCaprio’s character, Cobb—finally reunited with his family—no longer cares about the answer, which is why he doesn’t look back to see if the totem falls or keeps spinning.
While Smith has previously joked about turning down The Matrix—even incorporating it into a song collaboration with Big Sean—this marks the first time he has discussed passing on Inception. Despite confessing, “I’m hurt by those two,” Smith is no stranger to the sci-fi genre, having starred in beloved classics like Independence Day, Men in Black, and I Am Legend.
