Sony drops Resistance games from PS Plus revamp

PlayStation Plus members will lose access to 22 games next month, including major titles like Grand Theft Auto 5, Payday 2: Crimewave Edition, along with Sony-exclusive classics Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 - which will become completely unavailable after this removal.

PlayStation Plus, Sony's premium gaming subscription service, offers monthly free games, exclusive discounts, and cloud-based multiplayer features. Premium tier subscribers enjoy a rotating library of hundreds of current and legacy PlayStation titles across generations.

Industry site Push Square reports the May 20 removal will eliminate the last modern way to play two significant PS3 exclusives from Sony's first-party lineup.

The impending removal of Resistance: Fall of Man and Resistance 2 carries extra significance since neither game remains available for purchase on the PlayStation Store. These titles joined the PS Plus Premium catalog in late 2024, only to depart less than a year later. Without physical copies and a working PS3 console, they'll effectively vanish from public access.

The Resistance franchise represents Insomniac Games' first major departure from their signature Ratchet & Clank series, offering an alternate-history FPS experience before the studio shifted focus to Marvel's Spider-Man and other projects. While unusual for Sony to remove its own first-party content, this follows the surprising withdrawal of both Horizon titles (Zero Dawn and Forbidden West) last August. However, those games remained commercially available.

Notably, Resistance 3 and PSP title Resistance: Retribution will stay in the collection. The removal also affects more recent titles like the PS4 exclusive InFamous: Second Son.

The Resistance franchise has remained dormant since Insomniac focused on other projects. Former studio head Ted Price recently confirmed that while serious discussions occurred about Resistance 4, the project ultimately didn't progress beyond planning stages - similar to Guerrilla Games' shelved Killzone series.
