Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine 2's PC release has sparked controversy due to the mandatory installation of Epic Online Services (EOS), even for Steam users who don't want crossplay.
EOS: A Crossplay Requirement
Epic Games clarified to Eurogamer that crossplay functionality across all PC storefronts is a requirement for multiplayer games on the Epic Games Store. While developers aren't forced to use EOS, it's currently the most practical solution to meet this requirement for games also available on the Epic Games Store. EOS offers pre-built tools and is free to use, making it an attractive option.
Player Backlash
Despite Focus Entertainment stating that linking Steam and Epic accounts isn't necessary to play, the mandatory EOS installation has caused significant negative feedback on Steam. Concerns include the perceived "spyware" nature of the additional software, a preference to avoid the Epic Games launcher, and anxieties regarding the EOS EULA, particularly concerning data collection in certain regions.
However, many games utilize EOS, including popular titles like Hades, Elden Ring, and Hogwarts Legacy. This is partly due to Epic's ownership of Unreal Engine, which often integrates EOS. The negative reviews for Space Marine 2's use of EOS raise the question of whether this is a knee-jerk reaction or a valid concern about a common industry practice.
The Choice Remains
Players can uninstall EOS, but this disables crossplay functionality. Despite the negative reception, Space Marine 2 has received positive reviews for its gameplay, with Game8 awarding it a 92, praising it as a near-perfect sequel to the 2011 original.
The debate highlights the complexities of cross-platform play and the trade-offs developers face when choosing platforms and services.
