Square Enix Cancels Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link

by Jacob May 23,2025

Square Enix has officially announced the cancellation of their much-anticipated mobile spin-off, Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link. Despite initial excitement and several delays, including the postponement of its Android closed beta test, the company has decided to halt development on Missing-Link to concentrate their resources on the upcoming Kingdom Hearts IV.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link was poised to explore a previously untold part of the Kingdom Hearts saga, integrating GPS technology with ARPG combat. Players were expected to engage in battles using the iconic keyblades against the menacing Heartless, striving to save the world. The unique selling point of Missing-Link was its GPS feature, which promised to allow players to explore different global locations virtually, though the exact mechanics remained somewhat mysterious. This innovative approach might have contributed to the decision to cancel the project, as it presented significant development challenges.

Kingdom Hearts Missing-Link Cancellation Announcement

Square Enix's pattern of cancelling mobile projects has become a notable trend, often attributed to the complexity and density of their game catalog. While their games are critically acclaimed, finding a broad international audience for mobile releases can be challenging. This issue, however, was unlikely to affect Kingdom Hearts due to its established global fanbase. It seems more likely that the core concept of Missing-Link proved difficult to execute, prompting Square Enix to shift their focus to the next mainline installment, Kingdom Hearts IV.
