Stardew Valley: Jars or Kegs - Best Choice for In-Game Profits

by Gabriel Feb 03,2025

This guide compares Kegs and Preserves Jars in Stardew Valley, focusing on their profitability in crafting artisan goods. Both are used to transform crops into higher-value products, significantly boosted by the Artisan profession's 40% price increase. However, the quality of the input item doesn't affect the output's quality or selling price.

Kegs: Produce beverages like wine, beer, juice, and mead. Wine, in particular, offers higher profits than Preserves Jar products. Alcoholic beverages can be aged in casks for further profit increases. However, Kegs are more expensive to craft, requiring metal bars and oak resin, and have longer processing times. The final farmhouse upgrade (100,000g) is needed for cask aging.

Preserves Jars: Produce jellies, pickles, aged roe, and caviar. They are cheaper and easier to craft, making them ideal for early-game profit generation. Their faster processing time can offset lower individual profit margins, especially for low-value, high-yield crops. Some items (like roe) can only be processed in Preserves Jars.

Which is better? It depends on your farm's stage and goals. Kegs offer greater potential profit per item but require a larger initial investment and longer wait times. Preserves Jars provide quicker returns and are more accessible early on. A balanced approach, utilizing both Kegs and Preserves Jars, maximizes profit potential by leveraging the strengths of each. Consider the base price of the input item: for fruits under 50g and vegetables under 200g, Preserves Jars might be more efficient due to faster processing.

Updated Information (1.6 Update): The 1.6 update expanded the items usable in both Kegs and Preserves Jars. Forage items like leeks and winter roots can now be used to create juice or pickles.
